In excellent condition, here is a beautifully illustrated antique edition of Evelina by Fanny Burney. Published in 1925 by Macmillan and Co Ltd, London. With delightful line drawings throughout by Hugh Thomson (see photos). More detail below.

First published anonymously in 1778, Evelina, or the History of a Young Lady's Entrance into the World is a landmark satire and precursor to Jane Austen’s classic novels. Written in epistolary form (told through letters), it follows the witty yet naïve seventeen-year-old Evelina Anville. Raised in rural seclusion by a guardian, she is thrust into the glamorous, high-society worlds of London and Bristol. As she makes her way through balls, high fashion, and high-society events, her innocence leads to several humorous social faux pas while she learns to navigate courtship, eccentric relations, and 18th-century class expectations.

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. No inscriptions or markings of previous ownership.

Red cloth over boards have gilt decoration to the front and elaborately to the spine. Again in top order. The slightest of rubbing to the corner tips and spine ends. The red cloth of the spine has faded in comparison to the front and back, but the gilt is bright and this is a clean, tight, square and attractive book.

Your antique copy of Evelina will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift card with a message to the parcel if desired.
