A beautifully illustrated copy of Poet's Country edited by Andrew Lang. Published in 1907 by TC & EC Jack, London. With fifty illustrations in colour by Francis S Walker. The book and illustrations are in good condition, with some fading of the red on the back board being the main condition point to note.
Contents: Shakespeare; William Wordsworth; Byron; Coleridge; Scott; Shelley and Nature; Milton; Sir John Denham and Cooper's Hill; Waller, Cowley and Dryden; The Descriptive Poetry of the Eighteenth Century; Pope and the Minor Poets of the Augustan Age; Akenside, Armstrong, Shenstone, Grainger, Mallett and Smollett; Goldsmith, Collins and Gray; Falconer and Marine Scenery, Mason, The Wartons and Beattie; Langhorne, Jago, Scott of Amwell. Charlotte Smith, Bowles, Crowe and Hurdis; William Cowper; Crabbe and Aldborough; Tennyson; Chaucer at Eltham; Oliver Goldsmith and Hyde House Farm; Keats at Enfield; Edmund Spenser at Penshurst; Thomas Moore at Wicklow; Burns.
Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. With some spotting to the endpapers and frontis tissue and then just lightly and sporadically in the text. Has a book plate on the front free endpaper (see photos) and also inscriptions dated 1946 and 1994 on the following endpaper. All of the colour plates are present and in good condition with their captioned tissue guards. Gilt edged along the top and the other two edges are untrimmed.
Dark red cloth covered boards have attractive ornate decoration to the front and spine. With some rubbing to the cloth at the corners and the head and tail of the spine. This has led to a small amount of chipping and fraying of the cloth at the top and bottom of the spine. There is also thin split to the surface cloth along the joint of the spine with the back board. This is to the surface only and the binding of the text block remains good and strong. The top corner of the front board has a small bump. The bottom corner of the front board has some fading of the red colour of the cloth. Otherwise the decoration on the front and spine remains lovely and is extremely eye-catching.
The main CONDITION POINT to note is fading to the red on the back board (see photo 2).
A fascinating attractive book for the literature lover. Your antique copy of Poet's Corner will be wrapped with great care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to include a gift message in the parcel if desired.
H 24.5 cm x W 17 cm, 363 pages, 1.4 kg. I dispatch worldwide daily from the UK. (There are just a very few countries which I am unable to ship to).
* If you would prefer your book not to be decoratively wrapped but sent simply in the full protective packaging, please add a note to the order.
