c1880 Northanger Abbey and Persuasion by Jane Austen: Scarce, Antique Book

A scarce edition of two Jane Austen novels bound together in one volume. Northanger Abbey and Persuasion published by George Routledge and Sons, London. Undated but would have been released in the 1880s. With a black and white frontispiece and distinctive chocolate brown decoration to the pale brown cloth.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. With spotting to the preliminary pages and a little to the frontispiece tissue guard. Toning and one small brown blemish to the closed top edge. This copy has no inscriptions, although there looks to have been some pencil erased on the front endpapers. With the black and white frontispiece, else unillustrated but has decorative head and tail pieces of each chapter.

Light brown cloth over boards have ornate chocolate brown decoration to the front and spine, and gilt titles. A distinctive and unusual design, quite unlike any other Austen edition. In good order. Bumping to the bottom corners, and there is also some red ink to the bottom front corner. Otherwise very clean and smart. The spine has tanned just a little, and there is a small hole to the front spine joint in the centre.
