Here is a first edition hardback copy of A Governess in the Age of Jane Austen The Journals and Letters of Agnes Porter by Joanna Martin. Published in 1998 by The Hambledon Press, London. A comprehensive biography in good condition and with the original dust jacket which reads:
"We only know a surprisingly small number of eighteenth-century women as personalities. This is true, in particular, of women who had to work for their living. Which is why the survival of letters and journals of Miss Agnes Porter, dating from 1788 to 1814, constitutes an unusually important find."
Inside the contents are excellent with the pages being clean, bright and tightly bound. This looks to have been an author's presentation copy as there is a bookplate on the front paste down with the same family surname as the author. With a number of black and white plate illustrations (see photos).
The un-clipped dust wrapper is also in good condition. It has a few light creases and very faint marks with the main condition point being some fading to the spine. Otherwise smart and bright.
A fascinating glimpse into the life of a woman working in Regency times. Your copy of A Governess in the Age of Jane Austen will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift card with a message to the parcel.
H 24 cm x W 16.5 cm, 372 pages, 0.74 kg. I dispatch worldwide daily from the UK. With the exception of a small number of countries.
