1958 The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien / George Allen & Unwin Ltd, London / 2nd Edition, Tenth Impression / Early Copy in Very Good Condition
In very good condition, here is an early UK hardback copy of JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit. Published in 1958 by George Allen & Unwin Ltd, London. Being a second edition, tenth impression. Often these early copies do not survive in good condition, but this copy has only a couple of light marks to the boards (detailed below), and some fading to the spine being the only condition points to note. The contents are in superb order, with no inscriptions or marks.
Inside - opens and closes with map endpapers drawn by Tolkien. There is then a colour frontispiece and further black line drawn illustrations also by Tolkien. Both inside and to the outside edges the pages are clean and bright with no tanning or spotting. The book has developed a slight lean over time, but minor.
Green cloth covered boards have dark green decoration to the front, back and spine. Has a very thin scratch mark near the bottom of the front board. The green on the spine has faded a bit in comparison to the front and back and has a couple of faint line marks near the bottom (see the final close-up photo).
A scarce and highly collectable book. Your vintage copy of The Hobbit will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift card with a message to the parcel.
H 19 cm x W 14m, 0.4 kg. I dispatch worldwide daily from the UK. (With the exception of a small number of countries).
* If you would prefer for your books not to be decoratively wrapped and simply dispatched in the full packaging, a note can be added to the order.
