A delightful hardback edition of Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice. Published in this edition by Nicholas Vane of London in 1947 in the series known as the "Goldfinch" titles. It is rare to find these copies still in the original dust jacket like this one. The contents are in very good condition, with some chips to the dust jacket.
The text of this edition is unillustrated, but there are superb period endpapers which are contemporary Regency pictures reproduced from the fashion artwork collections at the Victoria and Albert museum in central London. These are charming (see photos) and they make this edition different from any other version of Pride and Prejudice.
Inside the pages are super, being clean and tightly bound. Tanning to endpapers. A few pages near the middle have some small nicks to the fore-edge - but minor. No writing or inscriptions. The top of the closed page edges are tinted black.
Has striking black cloth covered boards with silver lettering. These have been well protected by the dust wrapper.
Scarce original dust wrapper has kept a good dark un-faded black. Has a crease down the spine. With some edge wear nicks and chips along the top edge. Some loss to the top of the spine, and to the top back corner (see photos). Jacket has now been protected for the future by the addition of a removable plastic archival sleeve, and looks very presentable indeed.
