In good condition, here is a large-format vintage collection of Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales. Beautifully illustrated by W Heath Robinson. Undated but would have been published in 1930 for Boots the Chemists, London. With sixteen exquisite colour plates and many more line drawings (see photos).
Contents: The Marsh King's Daughter; Tommelise; The Snow Queen (in seven parts); Elfin-Mount; The Little Mermaid; The Storks; The Nightingale; The Wild Swans; The Real Princess; The Red Shoes; The Emperor's New Clothes; The Swineherd; The Flying Trunk; The Leaping Match; The Shepherdess and the Chimney-Sweeper; The Ugly Duckling; The Naughty Boy.
Inside the pages have some spotting to the endpapers and then occasionally through the text. There are also a few brown blemishes and handling marks. Has a detailed inked inscription on the front free endpaper but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. With tanning and spotting to the closed outside edges. All of the tipped-in colour plates are present as called for and in good condition. The book has developed a mild lean over time.
The boards have been kept in super condition, having been well protected by the dust wrapper. The gilt remains sparkly bright, with just a little lightning of the cloth in places.
Still in the scarce dust jacket. This has picked up some wear. With some nicks and creases along the edges and a small area of loss on the back at the top. The jacket has been repaired on the inside by the addition of some tape (see final photo). Apart from the edge wear the jacket is bright, clean and unfaded, with a lovely Robinson colour illustration on the front. It has now been protected for the future by the addition of a removable plastic sleeve (not pictured).
