1922 Glimpses of Authors by Caroline Ticknor / Illustrated Antique Book

In very good condition, here is a fascinating antique copy of Glimpses of Authors by Caroline TIcknor. Published in 1922 by Houghton and Mifflin Company. With numerous black and white illustrations. 

One of those quietly invaluable books for anyone who loves literary history, provenance, and the human side of 19th‑century authorship. The book comprises a series of intimate, anecdotal portraits of writers Ticknor knew personally or through her family’s long publishing relationships. Rather than formal biography, it offers behind‑the‑scenes encounters, conversations, and impressions — the sort of material collectors and scholars adore because it captures personality, not just reputation. There is a chat over afternoon tea with Jane Austen's grand-niece, as an example.

Some of the authors covered are: Dickens; Hawthorne; Lew Wallace; Thackeray; Henry James and Mark Twain amongst many others.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound with no writing or markings of previous ownership. Gilt edged along the top.

Dark red cloth over boards have shiny ornate gilt decoration to the front and spine. Again in very good order. With just some mild rubbing to the cloth on the corners, outside edges and spine ends - but minor. Overall a very pleasing edition.
