I'm delighted with this find of a scarce copy of Cinderella. Told by Githa Sowerby and illustrated by Millicent Sowerby with twelve of her wonderful colour plates and decorative borders. A large format hardback, undated but published in 1920 by Humphrey Milford for Oxford University Press, London.
This copy is over 100 years old. The contents are in good condition, with some wear to the surface and edges of the papered boards but remaining a lovely copy.
Inside the book opens onto delightful illustrated endpapers which are realised in shiny gilt (see photos). There is an inked inscription here dated 1928. The text is also ornately embellished with an elaborate illustrated border on every page. With just some mild tanning and spotting to the early pages. All of the beautiful plates are present with their guards. The tissue guard for the frontispiece plate has a tear up from the bottom (see photos).
Bound in decorative papered boards with cream cloth spine which has gilt decoration and titles. The main condition point to note with this copy is chipping and rubbing around the outside edges to reveal boards beneath in places (shown in the final close-up photo). Has some rubbing away of the top surface colour in places and a few faint dark marks to the boards. The illustration and titles on the front remain lovely.
The cream cloth spine has some light marks and has tanned a little on the outside edge. With a little rolling to the cloth at the head and tail. The ornate Art Nouveau gilt decoration has rubbed just a little. This is an eye-catching book to display.
