1919 Tales From Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb - 48 Colour Plates

In very good condition, here is a super antique edition of Tales From Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb. Published in 1919 by Ward, Lock & Co., London. With forty-eight colour plate illustrations by AE Jackson (see photos).

The Tales from Shakespeare were designed to make the stories of Shakespeare's plays familiar to younger readers. Mary Lamb was responsible for the comedies, while Charles wrote the tragedies.

Contents: Hamlet; The Tempest; A Midsummer Night's Dream; The Winter's Tale; Much Ado About Nothing; As You Like It; The Two Gentlemen of Verona; The Merchant of Venice; King Lear; Cymbeline; Macbeth; All's Well That Ends Well; The Taming of the Shrew; The Comedy of Errors; Measure For Measure; Twelfth Night; Timon of Athens; Romeo and Juliet; Pericles; Othello.

The book opens onto colour illustrated endpapers. There is a neatly inked inscription on the front free endpaper, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. All of the colour plates are present as called for. One leaf has a tear across the corner, just brushing one word of the text to one page (see close-up photo). Pages are clean, bright and tightly bound with just the occasional brown blemish and a few folded corners.

Blue cloth covered boards have black titles to the front and spine and a paste down illustration on the front. In top order, with very little sign of any wear. Clean, bright and smart.
