1918 The Grey Fairy Book : Beautifully Illustrated Antique Book

A beautiful collection of fairy tales being an antique book in the highly sought-after coloured fairy books series by Andrew Lang. These are becoming increasingly hard to get hold of. The Grey Fairy Book was originally published in 1900, this copy is a new impression from 1918 by Longmans, Green and Co., London. With the blind-stamped illustration of a fairy riding an owl under a crescent moon on the front. Richly illustrated with many black and white plates, plus numerous illustrations in the text by HJ Ford. In good condition - more details below.

Lang had grown up with a love of myths and fables and towards the end of the 1880s he began to collect and publish some of his favourite tales. The Blue Fairy Book, was the result, published in 1889 it met with great critical acclaim. The Red Fairy book appeared in Christmas of the following year. Lang went on to produce a series of twelve collections of fairy tales, published between 1889 and 1910. Each volume is distinguished by its own colour. In all, 437 tales from a broad range of cultures and countries are presented. The Grey Fairy Book includes stories from all over the world including France, Germany and Italy.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has an inked name and date of Xmas 1918 at the top of the title page, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. Still has the original tissue guard to the frontispiece, (with some tanning). The mildest of leans, but no cracked hinges.

In grey cloth over boards. Also clean and smart. Has some fading to the cloth along the top edge. Rubbing and rounding to the corner tips. A few tiny splits to the cloth on the spine ends. The gilt title and decoration on the spine have dulled but can still be discerned.
