1913 In Powder and Crinoline - Old Fairy Tales / Re-Told by Quiller-Couch and Beautifully Illustrated by Kay Nielsen / First Edition

One of the finest books from the Golden Age of Illustration. The book for which Kay Nielsen received his first English commission. Here is a first edition copy of In Powder and Crinoline - Old Fairy Tales, Re-Told by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch and illustrated by Kay Nielsen. It is the first of Nielsen's great works, the illustrations are spectacular.

This is a large-format hardback published by Hodder & Stoughton, London. With twenty-four gorgeous tipped-in colour plates with tissue guards and fifteen line drawings, plus decorations by Nielsen (see photos). It has been re-cased with the original spine cloth and new endpapers. Overall in good, strongly bound condition, with fading to the cloth design being the main condition point to note.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound with no writing or other markings of previous ownership. Has some occasional spotting through the text, mostly concentrated at the hinges. The top edge is gilt, this has rubbed a bit over time. All of the colour plates are present as called for, and all have their original tissue-guards still in place. As mentioned above, with new endpapers.

Golden-brown cloth covered boards have silver decoration to the front and red titles, with ornate gilt decoration to the spine. The silver decoration on the front has faded and is now hard to discern. The red titles are bright. The cloth on the front and back has some light shelf-wear scratches which are mostly only visible upon holding the book up to the light. The cloth has rubbed at the corners to reveal boards beneath, in particular to the bottom front corner (see photos). The re-casing ensures the spine is in top order.
