1912 Little Women by Louisa May Alcott / Large Format Vintage Hardback / SCARCE / Charming Colour Illustrations by Harold Copping / Lovely

This is a lovely, scarce antique copy of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women A Story For Girls. This edition is hard to come by. Published in 1912 by The Religious Tract Society, London. This is the first edition to have the colour plates of Harold Copping (see photos). In an unusual and beautiful binding. A fairly large hardback edition, this copy is 112 years old and so inevitably has some wear, detailed below, but remains a wonderful book.

Inside the book opens onto golden yellow endpapers. There is a fantastic calligraphy inked inscription on an early blank endpaper dated Christmas 1912 which is reminiscent of Tolkien's distinctive handwriting. With no other writing or markings of previous ownership. With a colour frontispiece and tissue guard and then seven further colour plates, all present and in super condition. There is spotting to the endpapers and then scattered sporadically through the text along with the occasional brown blemish and faint dark handling mark. Has a few small scattered black ink spots at the page fore-edge. The top edge is gilt, the other two edges are untrimmed and these have tanning and spotting.

Cream cloth covered boards have gilt titles to the front and spine, and two paste down illustrations both in ornate gilt borders. With tanning to the cream cloth on the boards and more so on the spine. The paste down on the spine has some chips and scuffs. The rear board has a couple of faint dark marks and a thin scratch mark. With a little rubbing and rounding to the cloth at the spine ends and a few tiny splits in the cloth.
