Here is a beautifully decorative antique copy of the medieval French love story Aucassin and Nicolette. Beautifully illuminated and decorated by Main R Bocher. Undated, but published in 1917 by George Harrap & Co., London. In good condition.

Aucassin and Nicolette was composed probably in Northern France at about the close of the 12th century and survived only in a single manuscript.

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. Cracks open at the gutter in one place, but in no way effecting the binding of the text block which is good and strong. Has an inked name on the verso of the front free endpaper but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. This is an absolutely beautifully decorated book. With illuminated colour pages and also decorated initials and other illustrations in line. With a number of other romantic colour plates. The top closed edge is gilt, with the other sides untrimmed.

Dark green boards have a brown silhouette paste down on the front and dark green letters to the spine. With some rubbing and rounding to the corners of the boards and some scuffs to the front paste down. Has a faded area on the spine in the middle and some rubbing to the cloth at the spine ends. With a thin scratch on the back board.
