1909 The Blue Fairy Book : Beautifully Illustrated Vintage Book

A beautiful collection of fairy tales being a vintage book in the highly sought-after coloured fairy books series by Andrew Lang. These are becoming increasingly hard to get hold of. The Blue Fairy Book was originally published in 1889, this copy is an thirteenth impression of that first edition from 1909 by Longmans, Green and Co., London. The Blue Fairy book was the first in the series and has the most popular tales. It has the superb stamped gilt design of a witch on a broomstick and is richly illustrated with black and white drawings (see photos), both in text and as full-page plates which are all present.

Lang had grown up with a love of myths and fables and towards the end of the 1880s he began to collect and publish some of his favourite tales. The Blue Fairy Book, was the result, published in 1889 it met with great critical acclaim. The Red Fairy book appeared in Christmas of the following year. Lang went on to produce a series of twelve collections of fairy tales, published between 1889 and 1910. Each volume is distinguished by its own colour. In all, 437 tales from a broad range of cultures and countries are presented. Tales in this blue volume are mainly well known Western European stories such as Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Little Red Riding Hood, Dick Whittington, Snow White and Rose Red, Aladdin, Cinderella and many more.

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. No writing or other markings of previous ownership. All edges are shiny gilt.

Blue cloth covered boards have gilt decoration to the front and spine. Again in top order. Very slight lean/bow to boards - but minor. A few light scratches to the back and one small area on the spine. Mild rubbing to the cloth on the corners and spine ends, with a couple of tiny splits to the spine head/tail. A couple of light faded spots to the front. The gilt decoration is shiny bright, and this is an extremely eye-catching edition.
