An incredibly striking edition of the Selected Tales of Mystery by Edgar Allan Poe. With eye-catching boards and sixteen colour plates by Byam Shaw. Scarce. Published in 1909 by JB Lippincott Company, Philadelphia. A large format antique hardback. Being 114 years old it inevitably has some signs of age and wear (detailed below), but remains a wonderful version of the short stories.
Contents: William Wilson; The Gold Bug; The Fall of the House of Usher; The Assignation; Ligeia; Eleonora; The Masque of the Red Death; The Cask of Amontillado; Metzengerstein; The Pit and the Pendulum; A Descent Into the Maelstrom; Ms. Found in a Bottle; The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar; The Murders in the Rue Morgue; The Black Cat; The Spectacles.
Inside the preliminary and final few pages have tanning and spotting. The rest of the text being clean and tightly bound with just the occasional nicked edge. With a colour frontispiece which still has the original tissue guard in place, as do the further fifteen colour plates. A few of the tissues have folded corners. Has some handling marks to the contents page and the page opposite (see photos). The top edge is gilt, and the other edges are untrimmed. A couple of pages are uneven on the fore-edge from the way they have been opened (see final photo).
Dark blue cloth covered boards have red footprint decoration to the front and spine, and gilt titles. The main condition point to note is fading and rubbing to the dark blue cloth on the back (see photo). The cloth has rubbed away in a small area here next to the board edge to reveal the board beneath. There is also some rubbing and fading to the front board along the bottom edge and corner. With a line of gold rubbed away also on the front titles. Otherwise the front board remains extremely bright and eye-catching. The spine has a few small white dots and just a little rubbing to the cloth at the ends. The gilt on the front and spine is shiny bright.
