Thrilled with this find of a first edition copy of In the Fairy Ring. Written and illustrated by Florence Harrison. Undated but published in 1908 by Blackie & Son, London. With twenty-four delightful colour plates and a number of other drawings and decorations to the text.

A boy falls into the hands of trolls, pixies take over one household's chores, a fairy replaces mortal children with changelings, and a girl interviews the Man in the Moon. A sought-after illustrator in the Pre-Raphaelite vein, Harrison is celebrated for her contributions to books by Alfred Tennyson, Christina Rossetti, and William Morris, as well as her original work. A sought-after illustrator in the Pre-Raphaelite vein, Florence Harrison is celebrated for her contributions to books by Alfred Tennyson, Christina Rossetti, and William Morris, as well as her original work. A super example of a classic from the Golden Age of Illustration.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has a fair amount of spotting to the first and last couple of pages, otherwise just some milder scattered spotting through the text. Opens onto illustrated endpapers which have a small inked inscription at the top of the front free endpaper. The rear free endpaper has some light creasing. All twenty-four coloured plates are present and in good condition, with just a little edge-wear to one and some slight nicks up from the bottom edge at the margin of a couple of plates. All edges are gilt, with a couple of pages protruding slightly at the fore-edge. Has the original bookseller's sticker on the inside rear paste down which, rather charmingly, is of the famous London toy store Hamley's of Regent Street. Hamley's is the world's oldest toy store and the book must have originally been sold from their book department.

Bound in the original publisher's cream cloth covered boards with ornate gilt decoration to the front and spine. The front board is in super condition, clean and bright. Has some faint handling marks along the fore-edge and a scattering of faint tiny dark spots. With a faint black mark near the bottom corner and a rust brown mark over the bottom corner tip. The gilt has remained lovely and bright. The rear board is again clean and bright with just a few faint marks, nothing too obtrusive at all. The spine has tanned in comparison to the front and back but the gilt is still bright and distinct. With a faint scuff in the centre. Has some rubbing to the cloth at the spine ends where there are a few small splits (see final photo).
