1902 Christmas Books by Charles Dickens / The Gresham Publishing Company / Illustrated / Antique Art Nouveau Christmas Book / Vintage Xmas

Charles Dickens wrote a number of short stories and novellas concerning Christmas. Here is a selection of five of his most famous works known collectively as The Christmas Books. Containing: A Christmas Carol; The Chimes; The Cricket On The Hearth; The Battle of Life and The Haunted Man. 

This is a striking edition of the five Christmas Books published in 1902 by The Gresham Publishing Company, London. Known as The Imperial Edition, with charming Art Nouveau design and with eight black and white illustrations by CA Shepperson (see photos). This copy is 122 years old and so inevitably has some signs of age and wear (detailed below) but remains a lovely antique Christmassy book.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound with no writing or inscriptions. Has some spotting to the early and later few pages, scattered lightly in the text and also to the outside edges. All of the eight black and white illustrations are present, and they all have a tissue guard still in place. The top edge is gilt.

In striking bright red cloth covered boards with gilt Art Nouveau decoration. With some rubbing to the cloth on the corners to reveal boards and the tips. Also has rubbing to the spine ends, with a split to the cloth across the head of the spine (see final close-up photo). With some faint light marks to the boards and a couple of thin scratches on the front board. With darkening to the cloth around the outside edges. The red and gilt on the spine has darkened a bit in comparison to the bright front board.
