1900 Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte / Scarce Two Volume Set / JM Dent & Co., London / Beautifully Illustrated and Decorated / Good Condition

Here is a delightful two-volume antique edition of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. Elegantly decorated and illustrated. Published in 1900 by JM Dent & Co., London. In good condition, with fading to the red on the spines being the main condition point to note.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. There is spotting to the endpapers. Has printed in Ex-Libris bookplates as published, on the front paste downs. With an inked name on an early endpaper of each volume but no other markings of previous ownership. Volume I has a portrait frontispiece and three further illustrations. Volume II has three illustrations. Each has their original tissue guards, clean and bright and they perfectly depict for me how I envisaged the setting and characters. In addition to the illustrations there are intricate headers. Volume I opens with a short biography of Charlotte Bronte and a page of bibliography of books about the Bronte family. The top closed edges are gilt, the other sides untrimmed.

Red cloth covered boards have ornate gilt decoration to the fronts and spines. Clean and smart. As mentioned above the reds of the spines have faded but the gilt remains bright, with a couple of small brown spots on the spine titles of Volume II. Has a little fading in places on the boards and a small bump to the top right corner of Volume II.
