1898 Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell / Macmillan & Co, London / Delightfully Illustrated by Hugh Thomson / Antique Book in Good Condition

A beautiful looking antique edition of Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford. With lovely illustrations throughout and in good condition.

Originally serialised in Charles Dickens Household Words in 1851. Macmillan and Co. Ltd, London first produced their version in 1891, with this copy being from 1898. Opens with a detailed Preface by Anne Thackeray Ritchie and with over one hundred cheerful, detailed line drawn illustrations by Hugh Thomson (see photos). Thomson is well known for illustrating works by Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and JM Barrie. Opens with a tissue-guarded illustrated frontispiece.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has tanning and spotting to the endpapers and then spotting scattered sporadically though the text. Gapes at the gutter in a couple of places but the binding of the text block is very good and strong. With a small inked name at the top of the half-title page, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. Gilt edged on all sides. 

The olive-green cloth covered boards are very attractive with a dark green stamped Art Nouveau design and shiny gilt titles on the front and spine. Again in top order. With just some very slight rubbing to the corner tips and spine ends, and mild tanning to the spine, but all minor and this is a very attractive book.
