1896 Emma by Jane Austen - Illustrated Antique Book

In very good condition. One of the most beautiful and hard to get hold of antique editions of Jane Austen's Emma. The novel was originally published on 23rd December 1815, whilst Austen herself was still alive. Macmillan & Co., Ltd of London first published their Illustrated Standard Novels Edition in 1896, with this copy being a one of those first editions. With 40 beautiful illustrations by Hugh Thomson which have gone on to help generations of readers picture the novels (see photos). The Macmillan edition was actually one of the first versions of Emma to be illustrated, and certainly so extensively. There is also an Introduction by Austin Dobson. Condition in detail below.

Opens onto super yellow peacock Art Nouveau endpapers which were designed by noted artist Albert Angus Turbayne who also designed the boards. Has spotting to the frontispiece and title page (see photos). Just the occasional spot or brown blemish in the text. All of the wonderful illustrations are present and in good condition (see photos). All edges are gilt.

Bound in the original publisher's deep red cloth over boards with intricate gilt floral decoration to front and spine. Again in top order. Has a little rubbing to the corner tips and spine ends - but minor. A small rubbed area inside the "M" on the spine. A few very faint marks to boards - again minor. Overall a very clean, bright, tight and square volume.
