In excellent condition here is a copy of the famous Peacock edition of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. First published by George Allen of London in 1894, this is a first reprint from March 1895. Illustrated and decorated throughout by Hugh Thomson. I have been lucky enough to have had a number of Peacock editions in stock over the years and this is one of the best Peacock editions I have ever seen. Copies in this condition do not come up very often at all and are keenly sought after. The only real blemish to note with this copy is a spot on the front board which has removed some gilt over the "R" and "E" in the title "Prejudice".

The contents are very good with clean, bright and tightly bound pages. With very slight spotting to the endpapers, otherwise there are only a handful of tiny spots in the entire book! The frontispiece illustration still has the original tissue guard still in place and this is equally clean and bright. There is one small nick to the top edge on one page. Has a neatly pencilled name at the top of the half-title page (see photos), but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. The pages are shiny bright gilt on all three sides. The top edge has a few faint scuffs, the other two edges are the brightest for any copy I have seen and cannot look too dissimilar from when first produced. The binding is good and strong and there are no cracked hinges.

The dark green cloth covered boards have the famous gorgeous ornate gilt peacock design to the front and spine. The boards are excellent being un-faded. The front board has no real sign of wear to report apart from the round spot mentioned above which obscures the gilt on the titles and a couple of other small areas where the gilt has rubbed on the peacock feathers. The rear board is plain green cloth. This has a couple of thin faint scratches to the surface and a couple of faint marks along the bottom edge.

The spine is equally good and in fact this has the best gilt work of any copy I have come across which again must look as when new! There is some mild rubbing at the head and tail with a small split in the cloth on the top edge.
