1895 Maid Marian and Crotchet Castle by Thomas Love Peacock: Antique Turbayne Covers, Illustrated

In excellent condition, here is a beautiful first edition thus copy of Maid Marian and Crotchet Castle by Thomas Love Peacock. Published by Macmillan & Co., London in 1895. With numerous illustrations by FH Townsend and with striking Art Nouveau boards by Albert Angus Turbayne.

Looking extremely eye-catching on display.

Maid Marian (1822) is a witty, romantic reimagining of the Robin Hood legend, blending satire, medieval adventure, and social commentary.

Crotchet Castle (1831) is one of Love Peacock's most sparkling satirical novels, a comedy of ideas set in a country house where eccentric guests debate philosophy, politics, and society.

Opens onto super yellow decorative endpapers (also by Turbayne). Has a small inked inscription at the top of the front free endpaper, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. Tanning/spotting to the frontispiece tissue guard. Shiny gilt on all sides - with some light scuffs.

In striking dark blue cloth over boards with ornate gilt decoration to the front and spine in Turbayne's signature peacock style. Again in top order. Light rubbing/rounding to the corners and spine ends. A small nick to the cloth on the front board fore-edge. The gilt remains stunning.
