1894 The Vicar of Wakefield by Oliver Goldsmith / Macmillan London / Beautifully Illustrated and Decorated by Hugh Thomson / Good Condition

A lovely antique book. This is a copy of The Vicar of Wakefield by Oliver Goldsmith published in 1894 by Macmillan & Co., London. Illustrated throughout with charming drawings and decoration by Hugh Thomson (see photos). These include a lot of attention to detail with chapter headers, footers and decorative initials. 

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. The main condition point to note with this copy is spotting to the endpapers and then scattered through the text. The frontispiece illustration still has the original tissue guard in place and this has tanned and spotted (see photos). This copy has not been written in and there are no other markings of previous ownership. The pages are gilt edged on all three sides and these remain shiny bright.

In lovely dark green cloth covered boards with ornate gilt stamped decoration. Also in good condition. Has some rubbing to the corners and spine ends. Has one small hole in the cloth on the back board (see final close-up photo), and a couple of light marks to the boards but minor. The gilt decoration and titles remain shiny bright and this copy looks extremely eye-catching on display.
