In very good condition here is an antique copy of Awful Disclosures of Maria Monk As Exhibited in a Narrative of Her Sufferings, Plus also The Nun - Six Months in a Convent by Rebecca Theresa Reed.
Maria Monk was a Canadian woman whose book Awful Disclosures... claimed to expose systematic sexual abuse of nuns and infanticide of the resulting children by Catholic priests in her convent in Montreal. The book is considered by scholars to be a hoax. Monk's story contains various inconsistencies.
It is known that Monk lived in an asylum in her early years and that one of the nuns mentioned in her story was actually a fellow patient in the asylum. There is some evidence that Maria Monk had suffered a brain injury as a child. One possible result of this alleged injury could be that Monk might have been manipulated, and might not be able to distinguish between fact and fantasy. Another possible result of the alleged injury could be that Monk had little understanding of the devastating result of her claims. It has been suggested, though not proven, that Monk was manipulated into playing a role for profit by her publisher or her ghost writers.
Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound with no writing or marks. The pages have tanned. There is a frontispiece black and white illustration plus four further illustrated plates.
In a lovely binding of dark maroon red cloth covered boards with black and gilt stamped decoration to the front, back and spine. All in top order with just a little rubbing to the cloth at the corners and the spine ends. With shiny bright gilt.
Your antique copy of Maria Monk will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. A gift message can be included in the package if desired.
H 19.5 cm x W 13.5 cm, 384 pages, 0.46 kg. I dispatch worldwide daily from the UK. (There are just a very few countries which I am unable to ship to).
* If you would prefer for your book not to be decoratively wrapped but sent simply in the full protective packaging please add a note to the order.
