1880s The Poetical Works of Percy Bysshe Shelley / George Routledge, London / Illustrated / Decorative Victorian Antique Poetry Book

An extremely eye-catching antique edition of The Poetical Works of Percy Bysshe Shelley. Undated but published by George Routledge and Sons in the 1880s, or possibly a little earlier. Illustrated with six engraved plates. In a striking binding and gilt edged on all sides. With a few condition points to note, detailed below.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound, with some light spotting. The text on each page is presented in a red decorative frame. Has a white sticker on the front free endpaper with the name "EC Dickens 1947", but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. The main condition point to note with the contents is it lacks the rear blank free endpaper, and there is also a cracked hinge here to reveal webbing (see photos). Also has a partially cracked hinge at the front, giving the board a slight wobble. The cracked hinges no way effect the binding of the text block which is good and strong. The gilt on all edges has remained shiny bright.

In green cloth covered boards with bevelled edges. Has ornate black, red and gilt stamped decoration to the front and spine and blind stamping to the back board. Boards are excellent, with just some rubbing to the corners. Has a little rubbing/scuffing to the spine and a couple of small splits to the cloth on the spine ends. The decoration and gilt on the spine are bright and this copy looks striking on display.
