1880 Jane Austen and Her Works by Sarah Tytler / Scarce, Important Early Biography

In very good condition, here is a scarce, highly collectable antique copy of Jane Austen and Her Works by Sarah Tytler. A first edition published in 1880 by Cassell, Petter & Galpin, London.

A title which does not come up very often. I have never had a copy in stock before.

Tytler’s book is important as it is one of the earliest full‑length critical studies of Austen written for a broad Victorian audience. It helped shape the late‑19th‑century revival of Austen’s reputation — the period when she began to be canonized as a major English novelist.

A lovely copy. Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. Inked inscription on the front free endpaper, and some small pencilled catalogue numbers on the reverse of this. Otherwise no other writing or markings of previous ownership. A fair amount of spotting to the engraved portrait frontispiece, tissue guard and title page with vignette. A few spots around the page edges. Decorative headers and opening chapter initials, else unillustrated. Some rusting to the inner staples. All edges are shiny gilt.

Blue cloth over boards have dark red and pale green decoration with stamped gilt titles. Decoration has dulled a little, but the gilt titles remain shiny bright. Boards, with bevelled edges, and the spine are clean and smart. Just a tiny amount of rubbing to the cloth on the corners, spine ends and a small area on the front joint.
