Here is an early copy of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel North and South. Published in 1877, just 22 years after the first edition by Smith, Elder & Co., London. It would originally have been part of a seven volume set of her novels, with this copy being Volume II. With a leather spine, marbled endpapers and page edges. Has four black and white illustrations. Condition in detail below.
Inside the book opens onto marbled endpapers with a book plate on both the front paste down, and opposite on the front free endpaper (see photos). Otherwise pages clean, bright and tightly bound.
In a dark red leather binding, with marbled paper sides. The spine has five raised bands, with ornate gilt work in each compartment. Has rubbing to the leather corner pieces, spine ends/hinges and also to the raised bands. With some of the red having rubbed away in places. The papered sides have some chips around the edges and some rubbing also in places. The gilt remains bright and this is a tight and square antique book.
Your copy of North and South will be wrapped with great care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift card with a message to the parcel.
