1874 Poems by Martin Tupper: Beautiful Antique Decorative Binding

In excellent condition, here is a gorgeous antique copy of Select Miscellaneous Poems of Martin F Tupper. Published in 1874 by Gall & Inglis of Edinburgh and London. Beautifully bound and with engraved illustrations. Shiny gilt edged and with an unusual tasselled bookmarker ribbon.

Tupper was highly influential in mid-19th century Britain and North America. Even admired by Walt Whitman. Queen Victoria was reportedly a fan, and Tupper was once considered for Poet Laureate.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has some light spotting to the endpapers and then scattered lightly through the text. Has an elegantly-inked inscription, dated 1874, on the verso of the front free endpaper. No other writing or markings of previous ownership. The edges are sparkly gilt. Has an engraved frontispiece, title page and four further engraved plates. The tassel bookmarker ribbon is delightful.

Beautifully bound in red boards, with ornate blind and gilt stamping. The spine has five raised bands, with gilt decoration in each compartment. Firmly and tightly bound with no cracked hinges. Just a little rubbing to the corners, spine ends and joints. The decoration has remained sparkly bright and this is an extremely eye-catching copy.
