1857 Lives of Illustrious Women of England : Super Engraved Portraits

In very good condition, here is a fascinating antique book of women's biographies. Lives of Illustrious Women of England or Biographical Treasury Containing Memoirs of Royal, Noble and Celebrated British Females of the Past and Present Day by J Tillotson. Undated but would have been published in 1857 by Thomas Holmes, London. With twelve super copper engraved plates (see photos).

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Elegantly inked inscription to the front paste down. Faint traces of elegant pencil which has been erased to the rear paste down - but hard to spot this. Otherwise very smart indeed with no other markings of previous ownership and just occasional spotting and tanning. All edges are shiny gilt. The engraved plates are in super condition, with their original tissue guards. Has developed a mild lean over time.

Bright red boards have intricate blind stamping to the front and back, and gilt decoration to the front and spine. Again in very good order. Some rubbing to the corners to reveal boards on the tips. The main CONDITION POINT to note with this copy is a split across the cloth at the head and the tail of the spine (see photos). The red and gold have remained lovely and bright, and this is an attractive book.
