Thrilled with this discovery of an extremely early edition of The Poetical Works of Edgar Allan Poe. Undated but research shows it was published in 1852 by J. & C. Brown and Co., London. That is just three years after Poe's untimely early death. In the original red binding with ornate gilt decoration and gilt edged pages. Has A Notice of His Life and Genius by James Hannay and twenty seven engraved illustrations. In good condition, includes The Raven and forty-two other poems.
Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound, with mild scattered spotting. Has a few mildly creased corners. With an inked name on the front free endpaper and also on the last page (which is an advertisement) but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. Has cracked hinges at the front and back but this in no way effects the binding of the text block which is good and strong. Lacks the rear blank pale yellow endpaper. The book is dedicated to Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The outside gilt edges have remained bright.
Red cloth covered boards have ornate gilt decoration to the front and spine and blind stamping to the back board. With a couple of bumps along the top edge (see photos). With some mild rubbing and rounding to the corners. With rubbing and some fraying to the cloth at the spine head (see close-up photo), and also along the bottom and joint. The red cloth is clean and smart and the ornate gilt is shiny bright.
