1803 Natural Theology by William Paley - Early Edition, Antique Book

In very good condition, here is an early antique copy of Natural Theology: or, Evidences of the Existence and Attributes of the Deity, Collected From Appearances in Nature. By William Paley. Being a third edition, published in 1803, just one year after the first edition, and still within the author's lifetime. In the original calf leather binding. Condition in detail below.

A famous book that argues God exists and is good by looking at the design of the natural world. Instead of using holy books or religious visions, Paley tried to prove God's existence using logic, reason, and scientific observations of nature. Highly influential in its time - before Darwin and David Hume.

Paley's most famous idea is an analogy:
Imagine you are walking across a field and trip over a stone. You might just think the stone has been there forever. It is simple, so it doesn't need much explanation.
But imagine you find a pocket watch on the ground. You notice it has complex gears, springs, and dials all working together perfectly to tell the time.
Even if you have never seen a watch made, you would never assume it just appeared by accident. The complexity and clear purpose of the watch prove it had an intelligent maker (a watchmaker).
Later Richard Dawkins Blind Watchmaker would directly answer Paley's work.

Paley argues that nature is much more complex and perfect than a watch. He looks at specific biological examples:
The Human Eye: He compares the eye to a telescope. It has a lens, a retina, and parts that work together perfectly to let us see.
Animal Joints: He points out how joints in animals function just like man-made mechanical hinges or ball-and-socket joints.
Because these natural structures are so complex and have a clear purpose, Paley argues they could not have happened by chance. Therefore, the universe must have a Divine Designer (God).

Once Paley "proves" God exists, he uses nature to describe what God is like:
All-Powerful: The massive scale of the universe shows God has immense power.
One God (Unity): The laws of nature are uniform across the universe, meaning there is only one designer, not many.
Good and Loving: Paley argues that God is good because the designs in nature are beneficial to us (e.g., eyes help us navigate), and God added pleasure to our senses (like enjoying food or beauty) when survival alone didn't strictly require it.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. A few light folds to the top corners and some toning along the closed top edge. A little tanning to the outside edges of the endpapers. Has an inscription to the front paste down "Worthington" of "Cowley House" - a prominent family and estate in Petworth, Surrey. There is also a prize inked inscription to a student in Oxford University for "DD" or Doctor of Divinity. The highest academic theology degree of the time. Unillustrated.

In the original calf leather binding. Has a split to the front spine joint, but it is holding firm. Rubbing to corners, spine ends and joints. Some loss to the leather at the spine head, which has been repaired/stabilised (see photos). A few scuffs and chips to the boards. Rubbing to the spine. There are five gilt bands and some decoration in each compartment. It is quite hard to see this due to fading/rubbing.
