1958 Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome / Reprint Society, London / Different Design to Dust Wrapper / Lovely Vintage Hardback / Illustrated

A children's classic adventure novel. This is a charming vintage edition of Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome. Published in 1958 by The Reprint Society, London. Richly illustrated. The contents are in good condition. In a super dust wrapper. Quite different to the usual jackets for this series and not one I've ever come across so far.

Originally published on 21 July 1930 by Jonathan Cape. Set in the summer of 1929 in the Lake District, the book introduces the main characters of John, Susan, Titty and Roger Walker (Swallows); as well as their mother, Mary; and their baby sister, Bridget (nicknamed Vicky). We also meet Nancy and Peggy Blackett (Amazons); their uncle Jim (James Turner), commonly referred to as Captain Flint; and their widowed mother, Molly Blackett. It is the first book in the Swallows and Amazons series, followed by Swallowdale.

Inside the contents are in good condition. Opens onto super endpapers printed with hand drawn maps. Richly illustrated in line. Has a fair amount of spotting to the closed outside edge (see final photo). The top edge is tinted grey. Has an inscription on the verso of the half-title dated Xmas 1958, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership.

The super colourful dust wrapper is also in good order. With some spotting, in particular along the fore-edges. Also has the odd edgewear nick and tear. The unclipped jacket has now been protected for the future by the addition of a removable plastic sleeve.
