c1917 Fairy Tales From Hans Christian Andersen / George Harrap, London / Beautifully Illustrated by Dugald Stewart Walker / Good Condition

A beautifully illustrated antique copy of Fairy Tales From Hans Christian Andersen. Undated but with an inscription from Xmas 1917. Published by George G Harrap & Co., London. Richly illustrated throughout with stunning artwork from Dugald Stewart Walker - twelve colour plates and many more in line. They are absolutely stunning, and it is uncommon to find an edition illustrated by this American artist. In good condition, with some water staining to the back cover in the bottom corner being the only real condition point of note (see final photo).

Tales included in this volume are: The Mermaid; The Flying Trunk; The Red Shoes; Thumbelisa; The Girl Who Trod on a Loaf; The Nightingale; The Garden of Paradise; The Wind's Tale; The Snow Queen; What the Moon Saw; The Marsh King's Daughter; The Travelling Companions.

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound, with just the occasional dark handling mark and folded corner. With illustrated endpapers which have the above-mentioned inked-inscription at the top of the front free endpaper. Has no other writing or markings of previous ownership. The top closed edge is tinted dark green.

Dark green cloth covered boards have illustrated paste down and Art Nouveau lettering to the front, and gilt titles to the spine. With some rubbing to the corners and spine ends (see photo). Has the above-mentioned water mark to the back bottom corner but this is to the cover only, and not to the contents. Otherwise having kept a strong, unfaded colour and bright, shiny gilt.
