In excellent condition, here is a finely-bound antique copy of The Vegetable World - Being a History of Plants With Their Botanical Descriptions and Peculiar Properties by Louis Figuier. With a glossary of terms and 470 black and white illustrations. Undated, but would have been published in 1880 by Cassell, Petter and Galpin, London. More details below.

The Vegetable World (first published in French as Histoire des Plantes in 1867) is a widely celebrated Victorian natural history survey by French science writer Louis Figuier. An accessible, richly illustrated guide designed to introduce the general public to the wonders of the plant kingdom.

The book is typically divided into four main sections:

Organography and Physiology: An exploration of plant anatomy, growth, reproduction, and internal functions;

Classification: A breakdown of how the plant world is scientifically categorized;

Natural Families: A systematic arrangement of different plant species and their characteristics;

Geographical Distribution: How climate, elevation, and geography shape the spread of plant life across the globe.

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. No inscriptions or markings of previous ownership. With marbled endpapers and marbled edged pages. Has a slightly cracked hinge near the beginning. The illustrations are a mixture of full-page plates and line drawn through the text.

In a fine black leather binding with marbled papered sides. Again in very good order. The spine has five raised bands with ornate gilt decoration to each compartment. Tan leather title plate. The black having faded just a little on the outer spine, but the gilt remaining bright. Light scuffing to edge pieces, and a little chipping to the paper around the edges of the boards - but minor.
