1974 Vintage Tolkien Lord of the Rings Set in Three Volumes / In Original Dust Wrappers, with Maps etc / With SOME WEAR / Vintage LOTR Set

Here is a scarce set comprising the three volumes of the Lord of the Rings trilogy by JRR Tolkien. Published in 1974 by George Allen & Unwin Ltd and in the distinctive and striking 1970s covers which are now highly collectable. This is a lovely set, there are several CONDITION POINTS to note. These are a couple of holes in the dust wrappers and a tear to the joint of one of the maps, the latter having been repaired with white archival tape and it is very hard to spot this. 

Inside the books are in very good condition with clean and tightly bound pages with the occasional brown blemish. Has an inked inscription to the front free endpaper of Volume I, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. The top closed edges are all tinted red. Each volume has a wonderful (hand-drawn by Tolkien), fold-out map. These are also in top order. There is the above-mentioned tear to the joint which has been expertly repaired. The map in Volume III has some creases by the folds. In addition to these maps there are further maps and symbol details illustrated by Tolkien in the text, else unillustrated.

All of the distinctive jackets are clean, bright and un-faded. They have some rubbing, chips and nicks to the edges and corners. Volume II has a tear to the bottom front corner. The main CONDITION PONT to note is a hole/loss to the fore-edge and round onto the inner flap of Volume III. This is shown in the photos and the video. The jackets are otherwise unclipped and have been protected for the future by the addition of archival removable plastic sleeves.

A very collectable set, priced to reflect the wear to jackets and map.
