1962 FIRST EDITION The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and Other Verses From the Red Book by JRR Tolkien / Illustrated / Good Condition / Jacket

A scarce first edition of JRR Tolkien's The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and Other Verses From the Red Book. Published in 1962 by George Allen & Unwin Ltd of London. In good condition, with the original dust wrapper which reads:

"Here is something that no devotee of the Hobbit epic can afford to miss, while awaiting a further instalment of these fascinating people. For during his renewed study of the 'Red Book' undertaken in order to prepare more of its contents for publication, the editor of The Lord of the Rings became interested in verses that are to be found in it...pieces written on loose leaves, crowded into blank spaces, or scrawled in margins. A selection of these is now offered as an 'interim report' to those interested in Hobbit-lore...they will welcome this addition with equal delight."

This is a collection of poetry containing sixteen poems, two of which feature Tom Bombadil, a character encountered by Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings. The rest of the poems are an assortment of bestiary verse and fairy tale rhyme.

Inside the pages are in excellent condition being clean and tightly bound. Richly illustrated by Pauline Baynes, I love the detailed extra decorations in addition to the full-page drawings. This copy has not been written in and there are no other markings of previous ownership.

In illustrated boards which match the wrapper, these are also good having been well protected.

The original dust wrapper is bright, un-faded and unclipped. Has a small pencil notation at the very bottom of the flap next to the original price. With some spotting and a little staining on the reverse inside, but none at all on the outside. It has some edge wear with a few tiny nicks and chips along the edges. With a small area of loss at the head of the spine and some slight rubbing at the tail of the spine but overall very smart indeed.
