1950 Fairy Tales & Legends by Hans Andersen / SCARCE JACKET / The Bodley Head, London / Super Rex Whistler Illustrations / Decorative Boards

In very good condition and with the scarce original dust jacket, here is an extremely elegant edition of The Fairy Tales and Legends of Hans Andersen. Originally published in 1935 by Cobden-Sanderson, London with this copy being a Bodley Head reprint from 1950. A beautiful book with numerous tales and black and white illustrations throughout by Rex Whistler.

Whistler (1905 – 1944) was an important British artist and illustrator celebrated for his murals, illustrations, and theatrical designs. Known for his wit and mastery of trompe l'œil. His career was tragically cut short by his death on his first day of active service in the Second World War.

A comprehensive edition with forty-eight tales including The Emperor's New Clothes, The Ugly Duckling, The Snow Queen, The Little Mermaid and The Red Shoes amongst many others.

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound with no writing or other markings of previous ownership. The top closed edge is tinted red. Has ornately decorated endpapers to match the front boards (see photos).

The cream cloth boards have the ornate green decoration on both front, back and spine. Also in top order having been well protected by the dust wrapper.

The unclipped jacket has some edge wear along the top and bottom. With some nicks, chips and some slight loss, mostly to the corners and spine head. With a tear up from the bottom edge on the back. These have been carefully repaired with tape on the reverse side. Has a faint light brown ring mark on the front (quite hard to spot - see photos). Otherwise the jacket is also very good, with bright, strong un-faded colours. Clean and smart. It has now been protected for the future by the addition of a removable plastic archival sleeve.
