In excellent condition, here is a vintage copy of Sources of Charlotte Bronte's Novels - Persons and Places by Herbert E Wroot. Published for the Bronte Society by Outhwaite Bros for The Caxton Press, in 1935. Condition in detail below.

A highly regarded, meticulous reference book. Upon its release, it was met with "universal acclamation" by scholars and literary enthusiasts alike. The book is a deep-dive, exhaustive study into the real-world inspirations, people, and geography behind Charlotte Brontë's major works, including Jane Eyre, Villette, Shirley, and The Professor. Wroot carefully traces the real-life counterparts of Charlotte’s characters. He examines her family, her friends (like Ellen Nussey), her employers, and her complex relationship with her Brussels schoolteacher Constantin Heger, mapping how these individuals were translated into fiction. He relies on his immense knowledge of local history to identify the exact buildings, villages, and landscapes that inspired Brontë's settings. For instance, Wroot details the Yorkshire "Shirley country" and the structural inspirations for Jane Eyre's Thornfield Hall.
