A vintage set of three lovely editions of Shakespeare's Tragedies, Comedies and Histories, plus Poems and Sonnets. Undated but would have been published by the fine bookbinder Robert Riviere & Son of London in 1925. In a leather binding and in the original slipcase box. It is unusual to come across the matching three volumes together and even more so in the original box. The paper used and design of the books means that they are in very easy-to-read and handle format as opposed to the more tradition Complete Works which tend to be huge and unwieldy.
Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. Opens onto marbled endpapers and each volume has a bookplate on the front paste down. Each book has a different photogravure portrait of the author, with a tissue guard (see photos), else unillustrated. The top closed edges are shiny gilt, with some spotting to the fore-edges. There is a chronology of the plays at the beginning and inside the plays are arranged in chronological order of their composition where possible. Printed on India paper, with glossaries at the end of each volume.
Well bound in blue leather with blue cloth sides. With a little rubbing and chipping to the spine corner pieces and some fading to the leather on the fronts where is it not covered by the slipcase. The outside faces of the spines have tanned where they are not covered by the box and are now a tan colour as opposed to blue. Each spine has five raised bands and these along with the compartments have some scuffs. Tragedies has a small brown blemish mark to the cloth on the rear board. The gilt titles have remained shiny bright.
The original blue cloth covered box has a few marks and a little fraying along the edges on the outside and some tanning and spotting on the inside. One corner has a small split but the box remains very sturdy and sound, and should continue to protect the books for many more years.
