I'm thrilled to find this first edition copy of The Loss of the SS Titanic by Lawrence Beesley. This is a first-hand survivor's account of the disaster remarkably published just two months after the sinking in June 1912 by Houghton Mifflin. With five pages of black and white illustrations including some double-page plans. In a full leather binding.

Beesley's book provides a detailed and harrowing narrative of the events leading up to and following the ship's collision with an iceberg on the night of April 14, 1912.

Beesley, an English science teacher and journalist, was a second-class passenger on the Titanic. His book captures the initial shock, the chaos during the evacuation, and the desperate scramble for lifeboats. He also recounts the eerie calmness of the lifeboat as he watched the Titanic sink into the icy waters of the North Atlantic.

His first-hand experience provides a detailed and reliable narrative of the events surrounding the sinking. Beesley's book being published to soon after the disaster, aimed to provide an accurate account amidst the spread of misinformation at the time.

His descriptions and observations have been corroborated by other survivors' accounts and historical records, making his narrative a valuable and credible source for understanding the tragedy.

This copy has been re-bound by hand by the Talin Bookbinders of Cape Cod. I estimate the leather binding to be around 35-40 years old. With marbled endpapers. Inside the pages are tightly bound with no writing or inscriptions. There are some purple stamps of the Sturgis Library, Barnstable on a few of the pages and the plates (see photos). Sturgis Library in Barnstable, Massachusetts, is a historic gem. It's the oldest building in the United States still in use as a public library, originally built in 1644 as the home of Reverend J Lothropp. The pages have mild tanning, there are also some spotting and brown blemishes through the text. With the odd nicked edge and folded corner. All plates are present as called for. After the tissue-guarded frontispiece of the Titanic there is a view of four decks of the Olympic, two full-page images of transverse middle section through the Titanic, longitudinal sections and deck plan, plus a full-page image of the Carpathia.

Re-bound in a full leather binding in grey blue. With five raised bands to the spine and gilt titles. Has some fading to the top of the spine and over onto the rear board (see photos). Otherwise clean and smart. A very solid binding indeed.

Your first edition copy of The Loss of the Titanic will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift card with a message to the parcel.
