In absolutely excellent condition for an antique title of well over 100 years old. Here is a copy of Adventures & Achievements published in 1912 by The Waverley Book Company of London as part of a series of books for children called The Children’s Hour in 8 volumes, with this volume being Volume 6 and this is a first edition. This volume contains a number of exciting true stories from American and European History. Some of the other volumes contain myths, legends and fairy tales (several of these I have for sale separately at time of writing).
Contents: Bears, Indians and Kit Carson; The Men Who Explored the Mississippi; A Naturalist Among the Alligators; Israel Putnam; The Pathfinders Lewis and Clark; The White Champion of the Algonquins; Audobon's Hostess; Winfield Scott and the Battle of Queenstown; A Story of Midshipman Farragut; Dolly Madison and the Burning of Washington; The Mobbing of Garrison; How Beecher Conquered His Audience; My Hunt After The Captain; Brian of Munster The Boy Chieftain; An Unwilling Rebel; Charles of Sweden The Boy Conqueror; The Lion and The Missionary; Imprisonment of Adoniram Judson in Burmah; Dr Kane to the Rescue; The Return of Napoleon Bonaparte From Elba and His Reception At Grenoble.
The pages are excellent being clean, bright and crisp. This copy has not been written in and there are no other markings of previous ownership. Cracks open at the hinge next to the title page but not effecting the binding of the text block which is good and strong. The top closed edge is shiny gilt. With sixteen colourful illustrations and charming illustrated endpapers (see photos). There are also many delightful line drawings in the margins.
Attractively bound in bright blue cloth covered boards. All in top order with no condition points to note. The front board has a colourful paste down illustration and sparkly gilt titles.
The cloth and gilt on the spine have faded just a little in comparison to the boards.
