An absolutely beautiful limited edition, full vellum-bound copy of Alfred Lord Tennyson's Idylls of the King. Published by Hodder & Stoughton, London in 1911. Numbered 182 of only 350 copies and signed by the artist Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale (see photos). Gilt medieval inspired Pre-Raphaelite influenced decoration to front and spine. Heavy art paper has twenty tipped-in Brickdale illustrations. The decoration and artwork are perfectly matched to Tennyson's Arthurian cycle. This is a striking large and heavy volume, produced to a high quality.
Opens with the tipped-in colour frontispiece and further colour plates as called for. Each with their original tissue guards and with ornate gilt borders. Some tanning and offsetting to the endpapers as is common with this edition. No writing or inscriptions. The endpapers have the same golden Excalibur decoration as on the front. The top edge is gilt, other sides untrimmed.
The vellum boards have mildly bowed and there is some dark spotting to the top front right (see close-up photos). Some darkening in a few areas, and darkening also to the spine. The gilt has remained in bright condition on the front and spine. This deluxe edition would have originally had cloth ties attached to the panels to keep the book closed and this copy no longer has those.
An absolutely lovely book.
