1911 Idylls of the King, by Tennyson, Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale Illustrations

An absolutely beautiful first trade edition of Alfred Lord Tennyson's Idylls of the King. Undated, but published by Hodder & Stoughton, London in 1911. With superb colour illustrations by the artist Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale (see photos). Heavy art paper has twenty tipped-in Brickdale illustrations. The decoration and artwork are perfectly matched to Tennyson's Arthurian cycle. This is a striking large and heavy volume, produced to a high quality during the "Golden Age of Illustration" as a premium gift book designed to showcase high-end artwork alongside classic poetry. Condition in detail below.

Opens with the tipped-in colour frontispiece and then the further colour plates as called for. All in top order. Mild spotting to the endpapers. No writing or inscriptions. Every page has an intricate gilt frame.

Dark-blue cloth over boards have teal-blue and gilt decoration to the front and spine. Again in very good condition. A few faint light marks on the lower, back board. A few light specks on the spine - but minor. Has just a little rubbing to the cloth on the corners and spine ends. Clean, bright, tight and square.
