1907 The Children's Book of Stars by GE Mitton / Adam & Charles Black, London First Edition / Superb Colour Plates / Lovely Edwardian Book

I was delighted to uncover this beautiful Edwardian book from 1907. The Children's Book of Stars, being a 1st edition published to a high quality by Adam and Charles Black, London. Although the title states "children" as with most Victorian and Edwardian science titles they are actually aimed at a high level and would today be suitable for a young adult/adult and make a lovely gift. There are a good number of pages and much information so it is not aimed at younger children. Beautifully illustrated with many black and white illustrations and plates and a further 10 in colour. This book is interesting also from a historical perspective when considering it was written 27 years before Pluto was discovered.

In good condition for an antique book of 114 years old. The pages have significant brown spotting and tanning, but are otherwise clean and tightly bound with gilt along the top edge. There is a neatly-inked prize inscription on the front paste down but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. Lacks one colour plate, otherwise they are all there and in good condition. They illustrate planets, constellations and there is even a map of Mars.

The blue decorative cloth boards also remain very attractive. The front board is in top order with bright decoration and gilt. The rear board has some rubbed areas that has removed the blue (see final photo). The spine has just a little rubbing to the head and tail, otherwise super with shiny gilt. This is an eye-catching copy to display.
