An extremely sought-after and collectable edition of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. Highly decorative and illustrated throughout. Cover design by A A Turbayne, with his distinctive "AT" monogram in the shape of a scarab beetle. Not found in as good condition as this one very often. A first edition thus published in 1899 by George Allen of London.
Condition is good, I will describe in thorough detail for the collector.
Inside the contents are good with the pages being clean, bright and tightly bound. Mild tanning to endpapers. With just a couple of pages having some tanning which looks to have been the result of a piece of paper being left in as a bookmark (see photos). This copy has not been written in and there are no other markings of previous ownership. Beautifully decorated throughout with illustrations by Chris Hammond (born Christiana Mary Demain Hammond and shortened her name to better compete in what was a male-dominated market for illustrators). The top edge is gilt. A tight and square copy.
In dark green cloth covered boards with ornate gilt decoration to the front and spine. The front has stayed in lovely condition. The gilt is shiny bright. Has a very slight bump on the fore-edge, but very minor and some rubbing of the cloth at the corner tips to reveal boards beneath. The rear board has some light rubbing to the green surface near the bottom. The gilt on the spine has remained lovely and bright. Has just some light rubbing with some tiny splits to the cloth at the head and tail and slight fraying and splits to the cloth along the spine joints in a couple of places, and down from the top edge front. This is to the surface cloth only and the spine joints themselves are good and strong.
A book which looks absolutely stunning on display.
Definitely a find for the Jane Austen enthusiast and a copy which will only become more desirable to collectors in the future.
