1897 The Yellow Fairy Book - Illustrated Antique Book

In very good condition, here is an elegant copy of The Yellow Fairy Book, edited by Andrew Lang and part of the coloured Fairy Book series. A beautiful collection of fairy tales. Scarce and highly sought-after, these are becoming increasingly hard to get hold of. With numerous black and white illustrations by HJ Ford. Condition in detail below.

The Yellow Fairy Book was originally published in 1894, this copy is a third edition from 1897 by Longmans, Green and Co., London. Dramatic gilt decoration to the boards.

Lang had grown up with a love of myths and fables and towards the end of the 1880s he began to collect and publish some of his favourite tales. The Blue Fairy Book, was the result, published in 1889 it met with great critical acclaim. The Red Fairy book appeared in Christmas of the following year. Lang went on to produce a series of twelve collections of fairy tales, published between 1889 and 1910. Each volume is distinguished by its own colour. In all, 437 tales from a broad range of cultures and countries are presented. The Yellow Fairy Book includes stories from all over the world with many tales from Hans Christian Andersen.

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound, with just the occasional light spotting. Has an inked inscription on the verso of the frontispiece, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. The frontispiece still has the original tissue guard in place- this has some mild spotting, and has a little loss across the bottom corner. The outside edges are shiny gilt. A clean, tight and square copy.

Yellow cloth over boards have striking gilt decoration and titles to the front and spine. Again in very good order. Has a faint stain mark on the rear board bottom corner. Some rubbing to the spine joints, and a small hole to the spine. A little pulling to the cloth on the spine ends, and rounding to the corners. The gilt decoration on the front and spine has remained in lovely, shiny condition, and this is an extremely eye-catching book.
