1896 The Animal Story Book Ed. Andrew Lang / Illustrated Antique Book

Here is a super antique copy of The Animal Story Book, Edited by Andrew Lang. With numerous superb illustrations by HJ Ford (see photos). This copy is a first edition, published in 1896 by Longmans, Green, and Co., London. A lovely book in good condition, with a few condition points to note, detailed below.

Sharing the same distinctive gilt-decorated cloth binding and illustrations as the twelve coloured fairy books edited by Lang.

This collection gathers true anecdotes, fables, and literary retellings about animals from around the world. With stories about bears, lions, dolphins, dogs and horses amongst many others.

Inside the pages are tightly bound, with no writing or inscriptions. Has an ex-library sticker to the front paste down (see photos). Some faint handling marks and the occasional spot/brown blemish. Also has a few folded corner tips and the odd nicked edge. Cracks open at the hinge at the half-title page, but in no way effecting the binding of the text block which is good and strong. The monochrome illustrations are absolutely superb. All page edges are shiny gilt.

In blue cloth over boards with gilt decoration to the front and spine of a lion and bear respectively. Again in very good order. A few faint marks to the cloth, but nothing too obtrusive. Has some rubbing and rounding to the cloth on the corners and spine ends/joints. The blue and gilt on the spine has dulled a little in comparison to the sparkly front. An eye-catching book.
