1896 Charles Darwin: Journal of Researches Into Natural History & Geology of Countries Visited During Voyage Round World of HMS Beagle

Here is an UNREAD antique copy of Journal of Researches Into the Natural History and Geology of the Countries Visited During the Voyage Round the World of HMS Beagle Under Command of Captain Fitz Roy by Charles Darwin. Published in 1896 by D Appleton and Company, New York. In a leather binding with marbled papered sides. A majority of the pages in this copy still have the fore-edge uncut so it has certainly never been read (see final photo). I have left them as they are so the new owner can experience reading the book for the first time as an original owner would have done in the late 1800s. They can be sliced open as you go through with a paper knife, sharp knife or the edge of a pair of scissors.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has an inked inscription on the front free endpaper dated 1897 and an inked name at the top of the title page (see photos). With one illustration of Darwin's finches, otherwise this is an unillustrated edition. The top closed edge is shiny gilt.

In a red leather binding with marbled papered sides. Has some rubbing to the corner tips and some loss across the head of the spine. With a split across the spine half-way down. The outside edge of the spine has darkened in comparison with the sides. With some light cracking of the surface leather down the spine joints, but this is to the surface only, and the binding remains extremely tight. Gilt titles remain bright.
