1895 The Whispering Winds by Mary Debenham / Scarce / Talwin Morris Design to Boards / Blackie & Son, London / Illustrated / With Some WEAR

Here is a scarce antique copy of The Whispering Winds and the Tales That They Told by Mary Debenham. Undated but research on The Victorian Web shows it to have been published in 1895 by Blackie & Sons, London being a first in this edition. With twenty-five charming black and white illustrations by Paul Hardy (see photos). If you like the Andrew Lang coloured fairy books, or works by George Macdonald then you'll like this as it is produced and illustrated in the same style. Has a gorgeous cover designed by Glasgow School artist Talwin Morris. 

This copy is 129 years old and has picked up a fair amount of wear, but remains a lovely book.

Inside the pages have scattered spotting through the text and a number of handling marks. With tanning and spotting to the closed outside edges. Has a stain on the top edge next to the spine, which also effects the top of the endpapers and opening pages (see photos). With a purple stamp on the front free endpaper (which also has some nicks at the top), but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. The book has developed a mild lean over time. 

Olive-green cloth covered boards have the ornate Talwin Morris decoration to the front and spine. With a good deal of rubbing and a little fading to the cloth at the corners and spine ends. Has a couple of drawn pencil marks on the back board (see photos). Also has a small white mark in the centre of the back board. The beautiful decoration on the front and spine is a little rubbed but still remains delightful.
